"Humanity has lived this long because it can change; yet it is held back by those who refuse to do so."

The Trans Requiem Project has been developed with Oxford-based composer Barnabas Sharp (they/them), who had the initial idea of creating a requiem specifically for transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse people: the requiem would be driven by reports of their unfair treatment, discrimination in the news, acts of violence and murder as a result of transphobia, and bringing trans-specific issues to light for the unaware general public. However, as inspired by requiems from the past, there would also be a shining ray of hope - in this case for a future where everyone (regardless of gender or lack thereof) can be happy and free together.

Wanting to avoid religious affiliations, the texts were written by the composer themself. Each movement explores a feeling that most trans+ individuals can relate to, including joy, inspiration, ignorance, mourning and pride. The style of these texts is designed to echo ancient writings not bound by certain metres, but featuring modern dialect. The texts have then been set to music, coursing through all sorts of musical styles including romanticism, minimalism, film and musical theatre.

Sharp's 'Trans Requiem: a Pseudo-Sacred Cantata' will be given its world premiere performance in Oxford in November 2026, with the choir made up of singers amateur to professional, and hailing from around the UK. It is set to be an evening filled with joy, defiance, and hope for the trans+ community.
